Your electrical service questions answered

What is an RCD?

A Residual Current Device or safety switch, protects you from the most frequent cause of electrocution - a shock from electricity passing through the body to the earth. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires.

How often do I need to test my exit and emergency lighting?

According to the AS2293. 2 standard for emergency lighting testing & inspection, all emergency luminaires and exit signs need to be inspected at 6-monthly intervals.

During the inspection, a trained individual must test the lamps and replace any defective lights.

What are the risks of using a powerboard and when should I use one?

Don’t:

• Overload powerboards by “piggybacking” plugs into one socket or by using double adaptors – all power boards have a maximum current rate.

 • Plug high wattage appliances (such as toasters, kettles and heaters) into powerboards – plug them directly to permanent powerpoints instead.

 • Use damaged, dirty or wet power boards.

 • Never use water to extinguish a fire caused by electrical equipment.

Do:

• Use power boards with overload protection, as this will prevent it from overheating

• Only use power boards with built in safety switches/circuit breakers

 • Place power boards on their sides to prevent dust build up in unused points

 • Provide adequate ventilation around the power boards

• Regularly check that all plugs are firmly fixed in power boards

Why should I upgrade my lighting?

Lighting should be upgraded once the lighting output is reduced due to the lifespan of the fittings deteriorating. Maintenance costs can also be a factor if globes are constantly being replaced and newer, more efficient lighting can save you money on your power bills.

How do I know if my switchboard is safe and up-to-date?

There are a few tell-tale signs which can indicate your switchboard is due for an upgrade. The most obvious is if your switchboard has rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers, it needs upgrading ASAP, as they contain copper fuse wires and are quite a large safety hazard.
